Atlanta Habitat for Humanity Women's Build Press Release
Atlanta Habitat for Humanity is currently seeking volunteers for the 12th Atlanta Women’s Build, a grassroots effort led by women, who raise funds to sponsor and construct an Atlanta Habitat for Humanity home for a working mother and her family. The build takes place over the course of seven Saturdays from August 15 to October 3, 2015.
Nearly 300 women volunteers are needed to work side by side with the homebuyer to construct the house, offering a unique opportunity to highlight the ways that Atlanta Habitat empowers women and builds stability in communities.
This is the eighth home built by the Atlanta Women’s Build since 2003, and it brings together community leaders who believe in the power of female volunteers. Leading up to the September start date, the committee must raise $80,000 from sponsors and volunteers to cover the cost of materials. Labor is provided by women volunteers, who are directed by a veteran female Atlanta Habitat construction leader and a field of skilled women supervisors.
No previous construction experience is required, just the desire to help make homeownership a reality for a hard working mother. We are asking for a donation of at least $100 to reserve your spot.
For more information on the 2014 Atlanta Women’s Build, or to donate and volunteer, please visit the Atlanta Habitat website at www.atlantahabitat.org/atlanta-womens-build or call Sarah Richardson at 404.465.1048.

Atlanta Habitat Executive Women's Press Release
Atlanta Habitat for Humanity and the 2015 Atlanta Women’s Build would like to invite female executives to be a part of a unique event that not only allows you to build rapport with other women leaders, but allows you to help construct a home for a working mother and her family.
The 4th annual Executive Women’s Build Day will take place on Wednesday, September 16, 2015 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This year the build will be lead by honorary chair Maggie Smith.
The Executive Women’s Build Day is an important part of the 2015 Atlanta Women’s Build, with the theme Building a Legacy. The project is dedicated to honoring the legacy of Larrie Del Martin, the recently retired President and CEO of Atlanta Habitat. Over her 18-year tenure, Larrie Del expanded the scope of the affiliate, leaving a true legacy of what vision, dedication and determination can produce.
This is the eighth home built by the AWB since 2003, and it brings together female volunteers to raise the $80,000 build cost and, over seven Saturdays led by female construction supervisors, make homeownership a reality for a woman working right beside them.
No previous construction experience is required on EWBD and there will fun tasks for everyone! We are asking for a donation of at least $500, or $250 for a nonprofit leader, to reserve your spot. Again this year, we invite you to sponsor a female Rising Star from your organization who could benefit from the experience, especially working with you. A Rising Star sponsorship is $250, and we encourage all participants to check on possible matching funds.
Start the process today by contacting Sarah Richardson at sarah.richardson@atlantahabitat.org or 404-465-1048. Or visit us at https://donatenow.networkforgood.org/AWB201. The registration deadline is June 30.

Atlanta Habitat 2015 Clark Howard Build
Since 1996, Clark Howard has been working with Atlanta Habitat helping us provide affordable homes for working families. February 2015 will mark two considerable milestones for the partnership. This is Clark’s 20th anniversary building with Atlanta Habitat and he will have reached his 60th Habitat House.
Clark Howard is a well known media personality who hosts the Clark Howard Show on Atlanta’s News 95-5, which helps consumers save more and spend less. He also writes a nationally syndicated column for the Atlanta Journal Constitution and regularly appears on the HLN Network.
In 1994, when Clark Howard first heard about Habitat for Humanity, he thought the program would be the perfect combination of his message of financial responsibility and the need for affordable housing. Clark and his wife, Lane, started saving money and he donated all of this speaking fees to a building fund at Atlanta Habitat, and in 1996 he was able to sponsor his first house.
Now, 20 years later, Clark is building his 58-61st Habitat houses - a year ahead of the schedule that he set for himself, which was to build 60 houses by his 60th birthday, in 2016.
In partnership with house sponsors The Coupon Mom, Charles Schwab, Signature FD, The Dan and Merrie Boone Foundation and MailChimp, Clark Howard built five houses this year in Howard Point, an Atlanta Habitat neighborhood in historic Venetian Hills. The subdivision was named in honor of Clark and Lane Howard and their tireless work for affordable housing in Atlanta.

Atlanta Habitat Summer 2015 Homefront
A Place to Call My Own
Evelyn Jackson has been an Atlanta Habitat for Humanity Homeowner for 27 years. After seeing a sign in the Edgewood neighborhood that Atlanta Habitat was building 20 new homes in the area, Ms. Jackson saw an opportunity to own a home of her own.
The build process stands out to Ms. Jackson for multiple reasons. One was that her home was the first to be built in conjunction with the Jimmy Carter Work Project, and the former president himself was there during the build process and dedication. “The Jimmy Carter Work Project built 20 Habitat houses, and Jimmy Carter and Mrs. Carter were there at my house dedication. He was very nice during the project. He even came and worked on the houses himself.”
But meeting the former President of the United States wasn’t the only highlight of the build process for Ms. Jackson. She said meeting the other homeowners that were going through the same process as her was just as rewarding. “It was nice to meet other homeowners and getting to work together to build our homes. It was nice to be there and participate and be able to see what went into our homes.”
Owning her own home meant a lot more to Ms. Jackson than just the floors or the walls. “To me, it meant a lot to be able to give my daughter and son a home, where they didn’t have to share a room. Where we could be on our own and have a place to come back to and call home.”
In December 2014, Ms. Jackson was one of six Atlanta Habitat families to pay off their mortgages, a feeling Ms. Jackson won’t soon forget. “It was the greatest experience I’ve ever had. To look back and say this is mine. All the sweat and time and effort me and my family put into it, it’s incredible to look back from day one to now and say it’s all mine. It’s simply amazing.”
Visit our website at www.atlantahabitat.org to see the CBS story on Ms. Jackson’s achievement of homeownership.

Atlanta Habitat 2015 Cox Enterprises Build
Saturday, Cox Enterprises dedicated two new Habitat homes, marking their 20th and 21st houses with Atlanta Habitat for Humanity. Since 1994, they have partnered with Clark Howard to help change the lives of families in Atlanta. The two homes were the last of 13 new homes build in the Howard Point subdivision, a new Atlanta Habitat neighborhood in Venetian Hills, named in honor of Clark and Lane Howard. These final two homes are a beautiful capstone to what will be an uplifting neighborhood of committed and empowered homeowners.
At the dedication Saturday, Cox executive Judy Train, who is also a board member of Atlanta Habitat, thanked the more than 400 volunteers who have built the two homes over the past seven Saturdays. Tyrene Hodge, Corporate Responsibilty Project Manager for Cox, accepted the hammer plaques of appreciation on behalf of Cox Enterprises, sharing the sentiments of many of the participating employees saying how great it is to work for a company that is so invested in bringing positive changes to the community and to the families.
Clark Howard was also on hand to share the story of the partnership started 21 years ago between him and Cox Enterprises, when he went to chairman James Kennedy to ask for support for this impactful work of building homes, communities and brighter futures for families. Thanks to that initial support and the overwhelming support of Cox Enterprises and its employees, 21 families now have a home of their own.

Goodwill of Statesboro Opens Career Center
STATESBORO, Ga. (March 4, 2013) - Goodwill Industries, one of the nations top five more valuable and recognized nonprofit brands, recently opened a new Career Center in Statesboro. The mission of the Career Center is to assist people with disabilities and other barriers to employment to live independently and become employed. In 2012, Goodwill job centers in the area have helped more than 1,400 workers find jobs.
The Career Center, located beside the existing Goodwill Store off Northside Drive, is run by the Outreach Coordinator, Rey Morales. “My job is not simple,” said Mr. Morales. “Through the Buena Vida Initiative, I am working to get the Hispanic community educated with the information they need to be competitors in the job market.”
Goodwill’s Buena Vida Initiative is designed to help members of the Hispanic community to overcome those language, education and cultural barriers that prevent them from becoming employed. “60 percent of the migrant immigrants that I see, don’t have a basic education,” Mr. Morales explained. “Most don’t even have schooling through the third grade.”
At the Career Center, classes take place Monday through Friday, teaching classes ranging from first to 12th grade, that are based on the State Department’s and the Department of Education’s requirements. The highest demand classes at the Career Center are ESL, English as a second Language, and Computer classes.
But the Career Center doesn’t employ teachers to teach these classes. Instead, classes are taught solely by volunteers. “Thanks to Georgia Southern University students, we are operating with enough volunteers at the moment, but we can always use more,” Mr. Morales explained.
For more information on the Career Center or Goodwill, please visit them at 812 Northside Dr, Statesboro, GA or at www.goodwillsavannah.org

But the Career Center doesn’t employ teachers to teach these classes. Instead, classes are taught solely by volunteers. “Thanks to Georgia Southern University students, we are operating with enough volunteers at the moment, but we can always use more,” Mr. Morales explained.

TUITION TO DECREASE NEXT YEAR AT GEORGIA SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY
STATESBORO, GA., June 13, 2012 -Georgia Southern University announced plans today to lower tuition for all students, starting in the fall.
Brooks Keel, president of the university, said that he was extremely pleased about the tuition decrease. “During the past several years, we have had to raise tuition a number of times for all of our students. We have been afraid that we have been pricing ourselves out of market.”
While overall enrollment has increased at the university over the past five years, from 14,500 to 16,275 this year, the average number of application for the fall semester is down. If applications continue to drop at the current rate, the university anticipates a 10 percent drop in enrollment from this year.
The university realized that it had to do something to offer their current and future students some relief. With more and more students attending junior colleges and other universities in the state, the university knew it had to do something. That’s when the president polled the board of trustee’s and they voted on a 10 percent decrease for in-state and out-of-state students.
However, the decrease in tuition will not have all positive effects. The reduction in the amount of revenue will force the university to make up for it in some other area. President Keel is adamant that no faculty or staff will be fired due to these cuts, however, certain programs will have to be eliminated.
The programs that are on the cutting board are: women’s studies, ornithology, arts and science honor programs, the women’s and men’s golf team, human resources management, the Georgia Southern host and hostesses program, and the department of Eastern languages.
Georgia Southern University is a public university that was founded in Statesboro, GA in 1906. The university is classified as a Doctoral and Research University by the Carnegie Foundation. The university is one of the largest in Georgia, with over 20,000 students and 117 different academic majors.
More information about the tuition decrease and program cuts can be found on the University’s web site at www.georgiasouthern.edu.

Fatal Car Accident On Northside Drive
STATESBORO, GA., June 3, 2012 - Sunday, around five in the afternoon, there was accident involving three cars on Northside Dr, near the Statesboro Mall. The accident was caused after Holly McGuire, 21 of Statesboro pulled out in front of Paul Lusk, 43, also of Statesboro, who was driving his Kia Sedona eastward. Otis Young, 37, also of Statesboro, swerved to avoid the accident when he flipped his Tahoe.
Bill Huff, who works at Longhorn Steak, was walking to work when he heard the accident. “It sounded like an explosion. I called 911 and told them it was a bad one,” Huff said. Brad Jones, an officer with the Statesboro Police Department, was the first one the scene. Jones said that he requested paramedics on the scene when he got there. First responders were on the scene shortly after he arrived and tended to the injuries. Shortly, they decided that Paul Lusk injuries were too severe and he was air lifted to Savannah. Both of the other drivers were taken to East Georgia Medical Center. Young was treated and released while McGuire remains in serious but stable condition.
Today it was released that Paul Lusk, 43, of Statesboro died at a Savannah hospital from injuries sustained in the accident. Holly McGuire, who was determined to be at fault of the accident, was charged with involuntary manslaughter and operating a vehicle while text messaging. Otis Young was charged with speeding after it was determined that his speed was a factor in him overturning his vehicle.
The Statesboro Police department said that they will be re-interviewing witnesses as well as McGuire and Young. “We hope to resolve this quickly for the sake of everyone involved, and we appreciate everyone's cooperation in our investigation,” Detective Mary Alice Marshall said Wednesday.
